Mary Armstrong Vice President, Environment, Health and Safety Engineering, Operations & Technology, Boeing

Mary Armstrong is vice president of Environment, Health and Safety for The Boeing Company, the world’s largest aerospace company.

Prior to her current position, Armstrong was president of Boeing Shared Services Group, responsible for leading a 10,000 person business unit that provides cost-effective services across Boeing's global enterprise. She was named to that assignment in December 2004.

Armstrong serves on The Nature Conservancy’s International Leadership Council, on the World Environment Center’s board of directors, on the executive committee for The Conference Board Chief EH&S Officers’ Council, and as Boeing’s delegate to the World Business Council on Sustainable Development. Armstrong also serves on the board of directors for IslandWood, a Bainbridge Island, Wash., school inspiring environmental and community stewardship.

Armstrong and her husband have five sons, and together they enjoy boating, fishing and other outdoor activities.

   
Jason Baumgarten

Jason Baumgarten is a member of the firm’s Technology, Communications & Media Practice and has deep expertise in software, infrastructure, online services and digital media. He is also a member of the firm’s Professional Services Practice.

Jason rejoined Spencer Stuart from McKinsey & Company, where he was an associate principal and a leader in the firm’s technology, media and service operations practices. At McKinsey, Jason advised some of the world’s largest technology and media companies on topics ranging from growth and innovation to organizational design. He also worked with many organizations, from government agencies to large retailers, facing disruptions from new channels and technologies.

Jason holds a M.B.A. from Stanford and a B.A. in economics from Vassar College. He serves on the Alumnae & Alumni of Vassar College Board of Directors and is an active member of the Seattle not-for-profit community.


 
Ty Cramer Community Volunteer
Ty Cramer

Ty is a community activist and volunteer. A mother of 6, she has devoted much of her time volunteering for various school efforts, recently chairing the Nominations Committee for the Parent Association, a Mission Focus Campaign volunteer and member of the Board of Trustees for Lakeside School. She is on the Chief Seattle Club advisory committee and serves on the board of Claeson LLP. Previously a certified Childbirth Educator, doula, pre-postnatal fitness instructor and PEPS Board Member, she continues to support maternal and family health through the Seattle Midwifery School. For recreation she enjoys triathlons and completed her first Ironman in August 2006. Ty holds an MA from the Maxwell School of Public Administration, Syracuse University.

   
 Bill Fritsch

Bill started his marketing career at Disney in 1976 where as Director of Creative Services he helped to launch new enterprises like the Disney Channel and Disney Home Video. Bill has spent the last 30 years building exceptionally creative advertising firms serving major brands such as Royal Caribbean, U.S. Bank, HP, AAA, PRECOR, Sprint, Microsoft and Hawaiian Airlines. He has built, acquired, and sold firms and is currently on a major project turning a high quality regional firm into and fast scaling national advertising agency. Bill is currently COO of Anthology Marketing Group with offices in Seattle, San Francisco and Honolulu and CEO of Anthology’s Mainland businesses. (He began his business career in 1973 as an auditor for Ernst and Ernst.)

He is married to a 4th Grade School Teacher, Elaine and has two daughters (along with husbands) both living in the Seattle area. His daughter Amy works in public relations for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Kathy is a graphic designer with Hornall Anderson.

Bill has served on other boards including Pacific Science Center, Seattle Public Library Foundation and other advertising industry groups.

   
 Gretchen Hund Andrews

Gretchen Hund Andrews is the Senior Staff Scientist and Team Leader at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Ms. Andrews specializes in topics that combine science and technology, public policy, and business issues. These topics range from nuclear non-proliferation to clean power generation. Ms. Andrews also designs and conducts stakeholder involvement programs that often include focusing on technology and its role in addressing an issue of importance to different stakeholder groups. She has worked with different industries and government entities in designing innovative approaches for soliciting feedback from stakeholders. Ms. Andrews was an adjunct professor at the University of Washington (UW) for six years, teaching the capstone course for graduate

students interested in receiving their Environmental Management Certificate. She helped the UW win a Luce Foundation grant which transformed her class into year-long projects. Prior to working in Seattle, Ms. Andrews worked for the U.S. Congressional Office of Technology Assessment in Washington, D.C. conducting assessments for the Oceans and Environment Program. Early in Ms. Andrew’s career she taught six graders geology in an outdoor education school on the backside of Pikes Peak in Colorado. Ms. Andrews has a B.A. in geology from Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT and earned a M.S. in political science (with a concentration is science, technology, and public policy)

Bob Karr Retired Attorney
Bob Karr

Retired lawyer and board member at Karr Tuttle Campbell. Elected to the International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC) and served as member of the Executive Committee. Mr. Karr is an author, contributor and speaker for numerous continuing education seminars and served as an instructor at the IADC Trial Academy. He currently serves on the board of the Bainbridge Community Foundation and recently chaired IslandWood's Capital Campaign West Sound Steering Committee. As a volunteer at IslandWood, he co-designed and constructed the floating classroom and built most of the benches at IslandWood.

Norma Klorfine

A community advocate and patron of the arts, Norma is a Trustee of the reopened Bellevue Arts Museum, an active member and past President of The Woman's Committee of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and former Chairman of the Directors of the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show. She is currently involved in "Bandstand on Broad" for the University of the Arts, the only institution in the country offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees in all arts, performing and visual. She is a current Director of the Klorfine Foundation. A native of the Philadelphia area, Norma and husband Leonard have two grown children, Melissa and Stuart and three grandchildren. Norma holds an English/Journalism degree from the School of Education at Pennsylvania State University.

 

 
Martha Kongsgaard President, Kongsgaard-Goldman Foundation
Martha Kongsgaard

Formerly a criminal-defense lawyer, Martha founded the Kongsgaard-Goldman Foundation with husband Peter Goldman to fund non-profit environmental, social justice, and arts organizations. She is also an active board member for the Bailey Boushay House and the Washington Environmental Council.

Dennis Madsen

Former REI President and CEO Dennis Madsen spent his entire career at Recreational Equipment Inc., the preeminent specialty retailer of outdoor specialty gear and services.  He began working for the company as a 17 year old high school student stocking shelves while working his way through college.  When Mr. Madsen retired in 2005, REI annual sales exceeded $1 billion.  Additional information about REI can be found at www.rei.com

             Mr. Madsen’s post-REI career consists of a mix of community and business board involvements.  Upon leaving REI, he and a handful of associates formed the Youth Outdoors Legacy Fund with the purpose of funding volunteers and outdoor programs that focus on getting urban kids involved in outdoor activities and stewardship.

In addition to the Youth Outdoors Legacy Fund, Mr. Madsen serves the community as a Trustee of Western Washington University and as Board Chair for Islandwood (an environmental learning center for youth). 

Mr. Madsen is passionate in pursuit of many outdoor activities.  This has led him to cycling adventures in Europe, treks through the Soviet Union and Nepal, river running the Grand Canyon and the Middle Fork of the Salmon, double century bicycle rides, summiting Mt. Rainier, helicopter backcountry skiing in British Columbia, and month-long trips in Desolation Sound, British Columbia on his sailboat Revelation.   

 
Beth Bryson Morgan General Manager, Morgan Partners

Beth has served on the board of IslandWood for six years, the last two years as board co-chair.  She has also chaired the Development Committee, the Executive Committee and several events.  Currently, she is also a member of the Jolkona Foundation board and the Bainbridge Island Art Museum advisory board.  Beth has volunteered on other boards, including the Seattle Chinese Garden (Treasurer, Marketing Chair); the Bainbridge Schools Foundation; and the Montessori Country School.

Beth is currently CFO for Morgan Partners, Inc., a real estate investment firm.  Previously, she worked as a Brand Manager on Contadina Refrigerated Pastas & Sauces at Nestle USA; as a CFO for an importer of Asian building materials; and in finance and accounting for The Clorox Company.

 Beth has an MBA from UCLA and a BS from UC Berkeley.

 

Linda Mhyrvold

Linda Myhrvold graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in English literature with a writing emphasis.  She spent 4 years with Microsoft in the Redmond and Paris offices where she was in event management for the systems and developer divisions.  Linda is an emeritus trustee for the guild board of Seattle Children’s Hospital and a current trustee for the Foundation Board.  She is the founder and an active member of the Phil Smart Sr. Guild for Seattle Children’s and serving as President of the We Believe Guild  for Seattle Children’s.  She also serves on the board of the Rwanda Girls Initiative.  She and her husband Cameron live on the eastside with their three daughters.



 Phil Rockefeller

Born and raised in upstate New York, Phil Rockefeller graduated from Yale University and Harvard Law School.  Following active duty with the U.S. Air Force, he moved to Washington State, joined The Weyerhaeuser Company’s law department, and was admitted to the Washington State Bar.

In 1981, Phil accepted an invitation to serve as education aide to then-Governor John Spellman, and did so through 1984, returning to the U.S. Department of Education in 1984.  After retiring in 1994, he won election to the Washington State House of Representatives in 1998, 2000 and 2002, and to the State Senate in 2004.  He was re-elected to his second four-year term as Senator in 2008. In the Senate, he chairs the Environment, Water, & Energy Committee and is a member of the Ways & Means Committee.

Phil is a long-time resident of Bainbridge Island, where he lives with his wife, Anita. They have three daughters -- Rebecca, Melissa, and Airyka.  He enjoys gardening, reading, jazz and classical music, and spending time with his two grand-daughters.

   
Carla Santorno
Deputy Superintendent, Tacoma Public Schools
Carla Santorno

Ms. Carla Santorno takes on responsibility for all learning and teaching activities for the Tacoma School District. Her responsibilities include supervision of schools as well as direction of curriculum and instruction; professional development; student services (bilingual, advanced learning, special education); and student support services (counseling; prevention and intervention; health services). Santorno’s primary goal is to make system-wide changes that result in increased student achievement for all students, and that eliminate the achievement gap between white students and students of color.

Carla Santorno has a life-long passion for education. Born in Kansas, she attended Denver Public Schools, where she later spent 28 years of her career as a teacher, principal, and area superintendent. Santorno is married with three children. The first person in her family to graduate from high school, Santorno has learned personally how powerful education can be, and she wants to ensure all children have the same opportunities.

 
Katherine James Schuitemaker CEO, The Resonance Group

Katherine serves on the boards of WSA (formerly Washington Software Alliance) and Washington Technology Center, and is CEO of The Resonance Group, a business strategy and marketing consultancy to technology companies around the globe. Her IslandWood-related board and commission appointments have included the Governor’s Digital Education Taskforce, the Governor’s Advisory Council on the Internet, Washington Economic Development Commission, The Learning Space, Digital Blackboard Foundation, and Coyote Junior High, a year-round grassroots arts, community and skills development program serving youth in Central Seattle.

 
 Preston Singletary

The art of Preston Singletary has become synonymous with the relationship between European glass blowing traditions and Northwest Native art.  His artworks feature themes of transformation, animal spirits and shamanism through elegant blown glass forms and mystical sand carved Tlingit designs. 

 Singletary learned the art of glass blowing by working with artists in the Seattle area including Benjamin Moore and Dante Marioni.  As a student and assistant, he initially focused on mastering the techniques of the European tradition. His work took him to Kosta Boda (Sweden) where he studied Scandinavian design and met his future wife.  Throughout his twenty years of glass blowing experience, he has also had opportunities to learn the secrets of the Venetian glass masters by working with Italian legends Lino Tagliapietra, Cecco Ongaro, and Pino Signoretto.

 Now recognized internationally, Singletary’s artworks are included in museum collections such as the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston, MA), The Seattle Art Museum (Seattle WA), the Corning Museum of Glass (Corning, NY), the Mint Museum of Art and Design (Charlotte, NC), the Heard Museum (Phoenix, AZ), and the Handelsbanken (Stockholm, Sweden).  Singletary maintains an active schedule by teaching and lecturing internationally. Recently, the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, WA, launched a major mid-career survey of his work, entitled Preston Singletary: Echoes, Fire, and Shadows.  This exhibition features Clan House, his largest commission to date, and will travel to venues across North America.

Preston was awarded an honorary Doctor of Arts degree in 2010 from the University of Puget Sound.  He has been engaged to speak at universities and non-profit organizations across the country, most recently at the Gates Millennium Scholars Foundation Conference in Los Angeles.
   
Al Smith Partner, Perkins Coie, LLP

Partner in Perkins Coie, LLP, focusing on finance and restructuring transactions. He is a graduate of Princeton University and University of Chicago Law School. He is currently active with Page Ahead, the Seattle Sports & Events Fund, and United Way of King County, and has counseled a number of nonprofits on various financial and business issues. He lives on Mercer Island with his wife Barbara Potashnick.

 
Jon Snare Vice President, Wells Fargo Private Bank

Jon Snare is a Senior Vice President and Regional Investment Manager for Wells Fargo Private Bank in Seattle.  In his role at the Private Bank, he oversees 8 portfolio managers who manage over $3 billion in assets for high-net worth individuals.  He has over 18 years of investment experience.  Prior to Wells Fargo,  Mr. Snare was a Senior Manager in the Investment Consulting Services practice for Deloitte & Touche Investment Advisors. While at Deloitte, he was a member of the Investment Policy Committee that established policy for the national practice.  Mr. Snare is a Certified Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder and a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) licensee.  In addition to his Board position at IslandWood, he is on the Board of Directors and serves as Treasurer of Public Education Network, a national organization that advocates for reform of public education in the US.  Mr. Snare lives on Bainbridge Island with his wife Jane and two children, Allison and Jason.

 
Dale Sperling Retired President and CEO of Unico Properties LLC
Dale Sperling

Dale is the President and CEO of Unico Properties LLC, which oversees 6.5 million square feet of office and retail space. Sperling is a Certified Public Accountant with a Master’s degree in Finance from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Active in Downtown Seattle Rotary, Sperling is also a member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) and serves on the Boards of the Pacific Real Estate Institute, the Downtown Seattle Association, the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce, the Rainier Club, and SAFECO Field’s Public Facilities District. In addition, he has been active for many years with the Chief Seattle Council of the Boy Scouts of America and is currently on the Boards of the Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center and Seattle’s world famous Woodland Park Zoo. Dale Sperling and his wife, Carol, reside on Bainbridge Island, WA. They have two sons, Erik and Andrew, and one daughter, Anna.

Paula Stafford, IIDA is Executive Vice President for Callison and serves on the Board of Directors. She works with fashion business and industry leaders in the creation of new brands as well as repositioning existing brands. Paula has been involved with design education for two decades as a board member for FIDER (Foundation for Interior Design Education Research) and NCIDQ (National Council for Interior Design Qualification) and serving on the board of advisors for Washington State University interdisciplinary design institute. She has been named one of the top twenty most influential people in retail for the last two years by Display & Design Ideas magazine.

Dr. Tom Stritikus is Dean and Associate Professor at the College of Education at University of Washington. His research examines the political, social, and cultural contexts that shape the education of culturally and linguistically diverse students. His collaboration with students, parents, teachers, principals and district and state policymakers has strengthened his commitment to improve educational policies and practices for culturally and linguistically diverse students.

He is the author of the book Immigrant Children and the Politics of English-Only published by LFB Scholarly Publishing and edited by Professors Marcelo and Carola Suarez-Orozco.

A UW faculty member since 2000, Dr. Stritikus received his Ph.D. in Education from the University of California, Berkeley, in Language, Literacy and Culture. Raised in an immigrant household, Dr. Stritikus began his public school teaching experience with Teach For America in Baltimore.

   
Edward Thomas Partner, Deloitte Tax LLP
Edward Thomas

Tax Partner-in-Charge of Pacific Northwest Cluster, Deloitte & Touche, LLP. Prior to joining Deloitte & Touche more than eight years ago, he was a tax attorney with two New York law firms. More recently, Ed worked in the Office of the Managing Partner on Strategy, Global Management and a wide variety of special projects. Ed and his family recently moved to the Seattle area from New Jersey, where Ed served as the President of the Ridgewood YMCA.

 
John D. Warner Retired Senior Vice President and CAO, The Boeing Company

Mr. Warner is a Board member at the Pacific Science Center, KCTS-9, Western Washington University Foundation, Successful Schools in Action, World Trade Center-Seattle, and on the Grants Committee for The Seattle Foundation (a past Board Member), and the Advisory Committee for Seattle Schools Cleveland STEM program. Mr. Warner was also a founding Board member of the Alliance for Education. In addition to his participation on the IslandWood board, Mr. Warner is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and retired Senior Vice President of the Boeing Company.
