Campus Enhancements Like all guest facilities, IslandWood’s campus must include the infrastructure necessary to ensure great service. To better accommodate our guests and keep pace with the increase in campus capacity, IslandWood will make several infrastructure improvements, including adding a new laundry facility, upgrading our AV systems and adding two composting toilets out in the field. Laundry is a necessary component of both our children’s and our adult programs. Current laundry demands have far exceeded the capacity of our small washing machines, and we have been sending our laundry out to be professionally done. We know we can be more efficient, save resources and clean the laundry in a more environmentally friendly manner by investing in our own small facility with commercial machines. This will minimize unnecessary transportation to Seattle and reduce resources necessary to deal with the increased number of children and adults on site each year. A simple stand-alone structure will be built off our maintenance building to house an industrial laundry center. The new facility will allow IslandWood staff to efficiently manage all aspects of linens for the increasing numbers of guests on site. Several of our buildings have presented us with challenges with our existing lighting and sound systems. The noise in the rooms make it difficult to hear any kind of announcements and the quality of the current system does not provide the ability to project over the noise in the room. By upgrading these systems, we can better serve all of our campus guests and continue to host large groups inside our Dining Hall and Great Hall, including our annual fundraiser. Children in the field are often far from the conveniences of our flushing toilets on campus. Because our children’s education programs focus on providing hands-on learning programs in the outdoors, we need to add two composting toilets. One will be built close to Blakely Harbor where many of the children participate in marine programs and the other will be located in the forest close to the Bog tree house and the Bird Blind.
