IslandWood Graduate Student Facilities

The graduate program at IslandWood is based on the principle that a more sustainable future demands knowledgeable, committed and reflective educators. Each year, our graduate students live, learn, and teach with us in a spectacular natural setting.

In order to maintain the low student/instructor ratio that makes our School Overnight Program so powerful, IslandWood’s graduate program capacity must also expand to accommodate the growth of our school programs.

During their ten-month stay at IslandWood, graduate students live in a private cluster of cabins on the north end of the campus. The new cabin will house six additional students, allowing us to grow the program by nearly a third with 24 full-time residential students.

Graduate Classroom

The graduate classroom will be located near the learning studios on campus, allowing the graduate students to have a central facility for classes, preparation and pre- and post-program gatherings. This classroom will be designed to support the learning dynamics essential to maximize the in-class needs of the students.

Graduate Sleeping Rooms

The Graduate Program at IslandWood creates the opportunity for students to live in a community while they spend 10 months in their educational program living on the campus and engaged in hands-on teaching with our visiting fourth & fifth grade students in our School Overnight Program. Graduate students live and learn together in a tight-knit community, providing a strong supportive partnership.

Our graduate student campus is located on the north portion of IslandWood’s 255-acre property. Six new graduate student sleeping and living spaces will be built inside a two story, ADA accessible building. The main floor will have a mudroom, a laundry room, a kitchen with pantry, a shared living room, and two bedrooms with a shared ADA bathroom. A staircase off the entry will lead to the second floor which will have four bedrooms and a study area for the graduate students. Each sleeping room will have a bed, desk and a closet for storage. The rooms will share a bathroom with their neighbor. Like all IslandWood facilities, the graduate sleeping rooms are wired with fiber optic cables, and outfitted with phone service and high-speed Internet access.
