Nature Day Camps

For campers entering 1st – 5th grades


Our day camps bring children outdoors for an active and creative summer experience. Campers will enjoy the many unique features of our site, including miles of trails, a suspension bridge, tree houses, organic garden, and acres of forest to explore. Our staff are experienced environmental educators committed to creating positive memories in nature and building scientific skills in young people. With camps focusing on everything from marine science to cooking to wizards, there’s something for everyone!

Day camps run from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

2012 Nature Day Camps

Entering 1st-2nd Grades

Nature Detectives

June 25-29, July 9-13Nature Detectives

Cost: $280

Get out your magnifying glass, focus your binoculars, dust off your field guides, and sharpen your pencils-it’s time to become nature detective. Many different species of animals live at IslandWood, but they are often too shy to introduce themselves to human visitors. However, they do leave clues that can give us information about their secret lives. In this camp, you will learn how to stealthily move through the forest to find and decode the clues that animals share.

Jr. Nature Girls Jr. Nature Girls (Sold Out!)

July 16-20

Cost: $280

No boys allowed-this camp is just for girls who are into science, art and the outdoors. Create a new and exciting team with friends while tromping around IslandWood’s trails. Hone your outdoor skills and explore science in new ways in this unique camp just for girls.

Jr. Nature Boys-NEW!

July 16-20

Cost: $280

Come hang in the woods for a week with just the guys. This new camp is all about building friendship and teamwork among young gentlemen. Construct forts, learn wilderness survival skills, and practice your tracking techniques in this new camp at IslandWood-no girls allowed.

Water Wonders (Sold Out!)

July 23-27Water Wonders

Cost: $280

Explore the wonderful world of water through fun hands-on games and activities all week long! You will investigate critters in our pond, discover trees that live in a bog, and seek out crabs at nearby Blakely Harbor. Discover a different aquatic ecosystem each day through games, songs, stories, and science explorations. We look forward to taking this water-filled journey with you!

Nature Chefs

July 23-27, August 6-10

Cost: $310

What if your family made dinner every night without an oven, microwave, or stovetop? What kinds of food would you eat? How would you prepare a hot meal? Learn how to identify and harvest edible plants in IslandWood’s forest and garden. Then experiment with tasty ways to turn your harvest into delicious snacks. Discover how food is grown, prepared, and returns to the earth in this unique camp.

Garden Explorers

July 30-August 3

Cost: $280

How does a plant really transform from a tiny seed into a giant tree? Meet the gardeners who keep IslandWood’s garden healthy and test your own gardening skills in this cool camp for growing green thumbs. Head to the forest to learn how wild plants survive without the help of gardeners. If you love plants and getting dirty then this is the camp for you!

Entering 3rd-4th Grades

Wizards in the Woods

June 25-29, July 30-August 3

Cost: $280

Discover your inner witch or wizard in this magical camp. Earn your wand by participating in fun classes about magic and nature. Mix potions in the lab, study herbology in the garden, and learn about the creatures (magical and non-magical) that live in IslandWood’s forests and wetlands. Hear myths and folktales that explore how cultures of the past found magic all around them, and create some stories of your own.

Microworlds Art Camp

July 9-13

Cost: $280

What does the world look like through the eyes of a dragonfly? How would it feel to explore the forest floor from a slug’s point of view? We will use microscopes, magnifying glasses, observation, and most importantly our imaginations to find out. Creative drawing, sculpture, poetry, and music will help us discover a whole new world.

Wildlife Explorers-NEW!

July 9-13Wildlife Explorers

Cost: $280

Come explore the world of wildlife biologists in the diverse ecosystems of IslandWood. Take your observation skills a step further as you dive into the science and tools used by zoologists all around the world. Learn about our resident owls and the science of tracking them, set overnight camera traps for coyotes, and create your own field guide in this new camp for kids who can’t get enough of animal science.

Would you like to discover the secrets of the natural world? You will work together with fellow campers to explore the flora and fauna of the ecosystems of IslandWood with games and activities designed to sharpen your senses. Embark on quests each day that will provide clues and help you understand the many mysteries of the outdoors. You will leave armed with naturalist skills that will transform your appreciation of the world around you.

Ocean Discoveries

Do you wonder what lies beneath the waves of the Puget Sound? Do you love searching for strange creatures in tide pools? Have you ever thought of becoming a marine biologist? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then check out IslandWood’s Ocean Discoveries camp!

Entering 4th-5th Grades

Dirt2Dinner

July 9-13

Cost: $310

We invite you to join this unique camp where you’ll explore the wonderful world of gardening, harvesting, and cooking. You will find edible plants in IslandWood’s garden, search for plants in the forest, and work with IslandWood’s chefs to prepare a delicious treat each day. Come roll up your sleeves to see where your food comes from.

Refund and Cancellation Policy

Cancellation at least 30 days prior to program: full refund minus processing fee of $40 per canceled camp. Cancellation 2 weeks prior to program: 50% refund of all fees. Cancellation less than 2 weeks prior to or non-completion of camp: no refund.
