Animals at IslandWood

Did you know that IslandWood is an official Wildlife Sanctuary--certified by the National Wildlife Federation? Dozens of different kinds of animals share IslandWood with us - from our favorite, the Banana Slug, to Eagles, Osprey, deer, frogs and some really cool dragonflies.

If we carefully observe these critters, we can learn quite a bit from them.

If you're looking at compost from the garden, try using our Compost Critters pages to help identify the invertebrates found in the local compost and soil.  It doesn't include everything, but it's a great start!

Check out the pages Animals on the Move and Animal Inventors to see a bit of what animals teach us.

If you really think you know your animals - or at least the tracks they leave behind - check out our Tracks Game.

You might also like to read the list of the most commonly seen wildlife - arranged by the time of year - so you can find out what you might see. We also have a checklist of all of the wildlife we've seen at IslandWood. (These are both acrobat documents.)
