Curriculum Kits

IslandWood has created four curriculum modules (or kits) that aim to expand the ways we support teachers in our School Partnerships Program.

The main purpose of creating these kits is to enable us to broaden student learning by taking the concepts explored in our School Overnight Program and linking them to our students' schools and home communities.

Teachers may wish borrow these kits before their visit to IslandWood to introduce concepts that will be explored in more depth once they arrive. These kits are also available for use after their visit to IslandWood to help connect what they learn on site to action in their home communities. The kits include the lessons, worksheets and equipment needed to carry out the learning activities.

These modules offer exciting lessons that:

  1. Provide schools with a solid connection to the IslandWood curriculum
  2. Encourage students to make a difference in their home communities

These kits were made possible by grants from The Russell Family Foundation and Adobe Systems Inc.

Soil Investigations

Students will gain a broader understanding of soil and its integral connections with watersheds and ecosystems by exploring and writing creatively about the components of soil and discovering the process of soil erosion, its implications and constructing models for erosion control.

Waste Stewardship: It's all Connected

Students will explore the relationship between natural resources and cultural items and consider the impact manufacturing cultural items has on earth systems. Students will analyze the current system for solid waste disposal and develop ideas for limiting its impact.

How Healthy is your Watershed?

Students will observe and record data about their watershed and identify abiotic, biotic and cultural factors that contribute to a healthy water system.  The students will learn to use equipment, and gain skills and techniques used by scientists to monitor a watershed to see if it is a healthy system.

Garden Explorations!

Students will explore the garden from different angles in order to get a better idea of how a garden grows, what makes it grow and how we humans can make it grow even better. These garden explorations utilize song, science, art, creative writing and the outdoors.
