School Overnight Program

At IslandWood's School Overnight Program (SOP), students, teachers, and parent chaperones are immersed in our magical, natural 255-acre outdoor classroom, located on Bainbridge Island, Washington. Our curriculum, faculty, and staff focus on supporting schools and teachers in their efforts to raise achievement levels for all students by using the environment as a powerful catalyst for learning.

IslandWood and Your School: A Long-Term Learning Partnership

When visiting schools schedule their Four-Day Residential Experience, they enter a partnership with our full-time faculty that creates a year-long learning progression for students and teachers. Our faculty is available to assist teachers in preparing students for the residential experience by offering:

  • Professional development for teachers. Teachers attending the four-day program are invited to participate in a professional development workshop designed to help them plan an individual classroom project. The workshop gives teachers much-needed time to refine the technical, leadership, and teaching skills needed to ensure the project's success. Specific workshop content is based on the individual needs of the participating teachers and is supplemented by interactions with IslandWood technology, arts, and science staff. Clock hours are available for an extra fee. We also offer professional-development workshops separate from the four-day program during select weeks, weekends, and evenings.
  • Curriculum consultation and orientation workshop for teachers to determine what students will focus on during their Four-Day Residential Experience and what supplemental activities will happen in the classroom.
  • Prior classroom visits to assist with planning for the four-day program. IslandWood staff get to know students and teachers and help prepare them for the Four-Day Residential Experience. Our School Partnerships staff work closely with teachers to ensure that pre-visit activities and the four-day program align with curriculum goals of the school and teacher.
  • Orientation presentation about IslandWood for parent groups, school PTSAs, or other groups, as requested by schools.
  • Post-visit to classrooms to reinforce what was learned during the Four-Day Residential Experience and help students implement a community-learning project in their own neighborhood.
  • Networking with other organizations to facilitate community projects to provide resources for teachers' specific curriculum needs, such as projects and day trips to other scientific and cultural programs.
