Science, Arts & Technology

IslandWood offers curriculum and programs that link science, technology and the arts in a unique and powerful experience of exploration, discovery, and learning.

Our  faculty bring the expertise to help guide students - young and old - in each of these areas, enhancing the learning experience through activities and programs that address the unique learning styles and interests of each child and adult.

All three disciplines are woven through our educational offerings at IslandWood - residential programs for school-age children, training programs for educators, and summer and year-round weekend programs for adults and families.

Science

Science provides the foundation for inquiry-based studies at IslandWood.

Arts

Connecting the creative process with outdoor hands-on experience cultivates innovative ways of both learning and knowing. The arts expand children's understanding and relationship with both natural systems and cultural communities, providing them the language and models to explore and express such connections.

Technology

Many aspects of IslandWood's design - both physical and programatical - were chosen to be sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Mac's Pond

Mac's pond was created by an earthen dam built in the 1880s to provide drinking water to the people in Blakely harbor. The pond is the site of a floating classroom, where field groups of students participate in water-quality testing, creative writing, and sketching.
